We are living through tumultuous times which require more than ever fresh perspectives on how communities are able to explore and question existing systems, attitudes, and policies in a variety of disciplines. For this conference we are seeking papers from PGRs which relate to subversive subjectivities in a wide variety of ways. This can include collective or individual challenges to hegemonic identity representations in different forms of media, or working practices that aim to change some of the current issues facing the creatives industries—such as the effects of austerity policies that devalue creative initiatives, or precarious working conditions with increased individualised neoliberal pressures to compete and produce work, amongst others. We are looking for original and innovative research within all cognate departments and at all stages of research that explore individual or collective instances of representations or practices that disrupt normativity or challenge the established structures of any subsection of the cultural and creative industries.
Presentations are invited on (but not limited to) the following topics or issues:
·Queering the CCIs, or exploring the subjectivity and practices of LGBTIQ creatives
·Representation of marginalised communities or identity intersections in media and culture
·Examining global media industries, or challenges to Western centricity
·Research on the production and consumption of counter hegemonic media and culture
·Subversive audience and fandoms studies
·Challenges to the lack of accessibility and diversity in creative professions
·Precarity and job insecurity in the CCIs
·Effects of social media platforms on representations of diverse identities
·Examining biases in AI and algorithm use
·Alternative ways of exhibiting, curating or archiving creative work
The conference will provide PGR students with the opportunity to present their research in two formats, as 15 minutes presentations with 5 minute’s Q&A, or as 3 minutes thesis presentation (a verbal challenge, timed, with no slides allowed).
